A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet) by Madeleine L’Engle
A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle is the first book of the Time Quintet series. It tells the story of a young girl, Meg Murry, who embarks on a treacherous journey to find her missing father. Along the way she learns about the power of love to save even the most broken of souls. Meg’s journey takes her through time and space, where she learns the importance of being brave and being true to oneself in the face of fear.
The story begins with Meg Murry coming home to find her brother Charles Wallace missing. He disappeared while Meg was away at school. The search leads Meg, her mother, and her friend Calvin O’Keefe to visit Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, and Mrs Which. These three peculiar women have a vast knowledge of time and space and tell the children of a tesseract, or a wrinkle in time, that will allow them to travel through time and space.
The trio decide to try and find Meg's missing father. After a tesseract journey filled with unexpected twists and turns lands them on a planet known as Camazotz, the children find themselves in a world under the control of a dark force known as IT. To save her father and find a way back home, Meg must find the strength to face her own inner demons and brace herself against the heartless control of IT. Throughout the story, Meg must make difficult choices; ones which will affect the entire universe.
Throughout the story, Meg discovers that the key to saving her father and everyone else lies in understanding the power of love and its ability to triumph over evil. This is seen in how Meg must use self-love to free Charles Wallace from the clutches of IT. By believing in her own strength and by embracing her gifts, Meg is able to save not only Charles Wallace, but also her father and everyone else around them.
The power of love is a reoccurring theme throughout the novel and is described in the book as “a force stronger than any weapon.” Love has the power to heal the deepest wounds and bring true joy to the heart. This is demonstrated in the way in which Meg teaches Calvin the importance of loving himself and embracing his inner powers.
Ultimately, A Wrinkle in Time is a book about learning to love ourselves and others, and understanding that sometimes we need to do hard things. It is an inspiring story of bravery and courage in the face of danger, and of the power of love in restoring hope to the broken and weary. It is a classic for all ages and a lesson in the importance of accepting and embracing our individual gifts.
